This is the capital of the country and despite the frantic pace of life here, Santo Domingo is a pleasant city especially where colonial-era buildings are concentrated. History buffs shouldn’t miss the Alcazazar de Colon (a castle dating from 1500), Casa del Cordon, Catedral Menor de Santa Maria. Major resort areas are Cabarete and Puerto Plata.
